  • Adapting to your individual needs: With experience teaching everyone from young children to retired adults, complete beginners to advanced students, and including those with physical and/or learning difficulties, I always work to adapt the learning process to each pupil.

  • Balancing the creative with the technical: My approach aims to help pupils develop the practical skills needed to feel confident expressing themselves artistically.

  • Learning how to learn: I focus on giving pupils the tools they need to make efficient use of their practice time at home. The way we practise music is the most important factor in how we enjoy and succeed at our instruments.

  • A wider outlook: As well as allowing the pupil’s interests in particular musical styles to guide their learning, I work to ground them in an awareness of the cultural and historical context behind the music we learn and enjoy.

In Edinburgh, I have worked with Portobello Music School, Rimmers Music School, and Edinburgh Young Musicians.

Testimonials

Nothing but positives! I am always inspired by my lessons with Sarah. Whenever I get stuck, she has a solution. When I can’t remember something, she has the patience to teach it to me again. It’s coming up to a year since I started taking lessons with Sarah, and I feel I’ve come along in leaps and bounds. Couldn’t be more happier!
— Lisa, piano pupil
Both [my daughters] look forward to their piano lesson every week. This is the first class [L] has ever carried on with beyond a couple of weeks. Your patience and encouragement have not only got her to persevere with her lessons but also to practice independently, which is again not something she has ever done. As a dyspraxic child, we are seeing huge improvements in her coordination but also her concentration and decoding skills. Her reading has improved dramatically and we credit her ongoing music activities with playing a huge part in this.
— Gordon, piano pupils' parent
My daughter has enjoyed the lessons with Sarah, who has encouraged her in a gentle way and made the lessons fun. Sarah has been sensitive to my daughter’s needs and interests, and always tried to choose music which my daughter likes. I would definitely recommend her!
— M, flute pupil's parent
As a late 50s adult learner who finds learning hard, I have enjoyed Sarah’s teaching […] as a survivor of a severe brain injury, I find learning hard, because of my blind-sight disability & poor memory recall. But Sarah has been very encouraging and accepting.
